Born British, die British

Rene Matic - Turner Prize 2025

Director and Producer

Join René Matić on a trip back to their hometown of Peterborough. For Matić, art is therapy, a way to process and question identity, family, subcultures, faith and what it means to belong while existing in the "in-betweenness" of many spaces. Drawing on their personal history, Matić reflects on a fascination with skinhead subculture and the tensions of their suburban upbringing. Matić asks what we mean by 'Britishness', thinking beyond a fixed place and towards something they carry with them, everywhere.

René Matić is nominated for the 2025 Turner Prize, on display at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Bradford, 27 September 2025 to 22 February 2026: https://bradford2025.co.uk/programme/...
